Houses of the Founding Fathers

Houses of the Founding Fathers

Houses of the Founding Fathers

When they declared independence in Philadelphia in 1776, they changed the course of Western history. But the patriots—landowners, merchants, and professional men who hailed from towns, cities, and plantations scattered along the eastern seaboard—had private lives too, quite apart from the public deeds we know so well. In this breathtaking volume, historian Hugh Howard and photographer Roger Straus examine the everyday lives of the Founding Fathers.

Houses of the Founding Fathers takes us on an eye-opening tour of forty stately eighteenth-century houses. We see the mansions of such legendary figures as Jefferson, Washington, Adams, and Hamilton, along with the homes of many other signers of the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution. At sites from Maine to Georgia, with stops in each of the thirteen colonies, the grand story of the Revolution emerges from unique and individual domestic perspectives.

Houses overlooking the sea, in busy townscapes, or atop mountains reveal these patriots’ tastes in architecture, furniture, and horticulture. There are tales of friends and enemies, murderous relatives, reluctant revolutionaries, adoring wives, and runaway servants. The founding families are brought to life in the rituals of birth and death, the food they ate, the archaic medical practices they endured, their household arrangements, and the way their slaves lived.

Houses of the Founding Fathers
offers a penetrating look at the private lives of the men whose ideas ignited an insurrection against England—and who helped create the modern world.

"The 40 houses and 48 people profiled in this lushly illustrated coffee-table book provide a sense of place for the American Revolution. Hugh Howard's text peoples the bare rooms in the reader's mind, and Straus' photographs give the armchair traveler a good sense of what tourists experience, if not a complete historical accounting."

"What a smart, elegantly conceived book this is! Hugh Howard and photographer Roger Strauss III walk us through the homes of our Founding Fathers, transporting us back in time. A real treasure!"

Engaging in both text and photography5
I found this book to be very interesting and one which told me more about people with whom I am acquainted and, importantly, people important to me about whom I knew little. The photography is stunning.

Wow! Interesting history & architectural info!5
This book has not only stunning photos and info about the houses, but also tons of history. It's like "If Walls Could Talk" for all of our founding fathers' homes. Family life, politics, business, & more went on in these homes, and this book delves into all of it. However, it does ignore the slavery issue, since it isn't PC to be reminded that most wealthy landowners, North & South, had slaves; including the founders.

    great photos5
This book is a gem of photos and text about all sorts of Americans and how they lived. Most impressed that it did not just cover the usual presidents

a great new-be wanna be fashion designer book5
This book is excellent to develop creative ideas and skills, and it encourgaes you to develop your own unique styles and to step outside of the box like real fashion designers. Each unit has it's own project for you to go out and do on your own, it is lots of fun. Other people who reviewed this and hated it did not understand it and do not want to be fashion designers because this book teaches the beginner fashion designer a lot, something that you would learn in college! Believe me I know because I'm going to college for fashion design and I would highly recommend this book for the beginner and serious fashion designer. A lot of fun and new ways to be creative and develop new styles from you personally.

    Preacher Vol. 3: Proud Americans

The Reverend Jesse Custer is a Texas minister who swears worse than a sailor and is not above killing people who get in his way. One might say he's lost his faith. No, he's just looking for God, and when he finds Him... Proud Americans is another sick and fun addition to the Preacher series. This book contains three story lines: One, a short tale about Custer's father in Vietnam. Two, a recounting of the transformation of Custer's Irish buddy Cassidy into a vampire and his coming to America. And three, the conclusion to the story begun in Preacher: Until the End of the World, the story of the angelic mafia (known as the Grail) who have come after Reverend Custer and the secret power inside him called "Genesis." --Jim Pascoe

    the journey continues5
I have to say, this volume is weaker than the previous two, though that might be more because it focuses on Cassidy and his origins, and as loveable as he is, what makes this series great is its meditations on God. And you need the main storyline for that. Still, loved it.

5 stars for content, 2 for paper quality3
I love Preacher and have no complaints with the content of the book, but I have a complaint about the paper quality of this volume.

My complaint is that this volume is, for some reason, printed on a noticeably cheaper grade of paper than the other volumes I have, which were printed on the nice glossy paper that all comics should be printed on. A few other Vertigo trade paperbacks I've ordered online recently have use this same grade of paper, is this some kind of cost-cutting measure that they've recently introduced? If the prices of the books were lowered accordingly, I wouldn't mind so much, but it's a little irritating to pay the same price as the volumes that have nice glossy paper and instead get the cheap phonebook-like paper.

I posted a question about this on the Vertigo message boards a couple of weeks ago, but I never got a response.

    Graphic SF Reader4
Stuff about Cassidy the immigrant, and his bastich acts. Early on in his life, Cassidy is fairly useless. He gets asked to protect someone, and fails, he gets in trouble, and runs away. Along the way he becomes a vampire. This just makes him a long lived scumbag, and does not improve things at all.

    Review
“A loving documentary and brutal fable, a mix of compassion and stoicism [that] sums up the experience of the Holocaust with as much power and as little pretension as any other work I can think of.”
    The New Republic

“A quiet triumph, moving and simple–impossible to describe accurately, and impossible to achieve in any medium but comics.”
    –The Washington Post

“Spiegelman has turned the exuberant fantasy of comics inside out by giving us the most incredible fantasy in comics’ history: something that actually occurred…. The central relationship is not that of cat and mouse, but that of Art and Vladek. Maus is terrifying not for its brutality, but for its tenderness and guilt.”
    The New Yorker

“All too infrequently, a book comes along that’s as daring as it is acclaimed. Art Spiegelman’s Maus is just such a book.”
    Esquire

“An epic story told in tiny pictures.”
    The New York Times

“A remarkable work, awesome in its conception and execution… at one and the same time a novel, a documentary, a memoir, and a comic book. Brilliant, just brilliant.”
    –Jules Feffer

    MAUS is no mouse5
There aren't enough superlatives to describe this graphic novel. It's beautifully and cleverly written and illustrated. Characterization and history blend easily and realistically. MAUS really is a novel - to be read thoughtfully/carefully/even slowly. In several readings I've found new details and concepts and I'm sure this will continue to happen. Allegorical? Of course; yet I've never read a better narrative/description of the holocaust.

READ NEW GRAPIC, BUT TRUE/PRESENT HISTORY: "PALESTINE," BY JOE SACCO. A CURRENT EVENT 1
Current and true atrocities going on right now A deafening silence: in Israel, is it now okay to kill Americans? (Peacemaking).(implications of recent death and injuries of peace activists in Israel): An article from: Sojourners

maus is an old anti-Gentile and anti-everybody distortion of truth during WWII. maus mocks others' suffering in a cold and insensitive way.

maus is dated and still very upsetting, to people who really understand it bigoted and hurtful intent.

Don't waste time anymore, and read about what is going on right now - today! If you like the comic book form, then read and order PALESTINE, by JOE SACCO. Palestine or Palestine: The Special Editionand The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine These books are about the present and ongoing -today, right now as you read this review - killing and murders of helpless and homeless Palestinian families at the hands of the Jews. Although in graphic/comic form, there is 'nothing' funny about it. But if that genre motivates you to read, then you will learn a ton in an interesting way, especially the way Sacco has brilliantly drawn and presented this present day Palestinian holocaust. Read also, Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid - no pictures, but superbly documented facts, objectively written.

Unlike maus, PALESTINE tells a true and objective story about something horrible happening right NOW, not a horribly bigoted and confused version of what, might of happened 80 years ago!?

PALESTINE by JOE SACCO, is done with superior artistry and writing. It
makes maus look like, well a maus.

Many a student comes away reading maus and say: "Why would anyone depict the Jews as RATS, as Goebbels did. Spiegelman's bigotry is clear,i.e., he catagorizes people as certain animals, as Goebbels made jews the rats. A RACIST concept in and of itself.

What does maus achieve? The answer is easy: compounded ANTI-SEMITISM. These kinds of hate writings against Poles and Germans always backfire in the face of Jews like spiegleman - ALWAYS! Was Spiegelman expecting 200 million Poles and germans to rave about being mocked - NO. Will maus help healing between future generations - ABSOLUTELY NOT!

Poles deserved none of Spiegelmans mockery and got the most. Polish students today go home sick to their stomachs while being subjected to this torture by cruel and insensitive teachers: WHO-DON'T-GET-IT!. EVERY POLE ON THIS EARTH IS RELATED TO SOMEONE WHO WAS BRUTALIZED AND KILLED BY THE GERMANS - EVERY POLISH CATHOLIC. Five, 5 million Polish Catholics were slaughtered by thr Germans. Auschwitz' first 2 year only murdered Polish Catholic school children, teachers, professors, nuns and priests - NO JEWS. THE POLISH CHILDREN WERE TAKEN FROM SCHOOL, AND THOUGHT THEY WERE GOING ON AN OUTING - SKIPPING ALONG - NOT KNOWING THE GERMAN DEATH AND TORTURE THAT AWAITED THEM.

Fortunately, maus is being banned more than ever and most credible bookstores refuse to sell this hurtful bigotry. I thank them for getting it.

PALESTINE BY JOE SACCO, you'll read it in one sitting. PALESTINE is about TODAY. It is a general overview of truth, about an event that is effecting our image and safety in America. Perhaps spigelman should tell his Jewish spere of influence to stop murdering helpless Palestinians today. READ PALESTINE!

    Graphic literature at its best5
The Complete Maus: A Survivor's Tale collects both volumes of Art Spiegelman's Pulitzer Prize winning graphic novel. The complete collection is how the book called the "first masterpiece in comic book history" is meant to be appreciated. A haunting piece of work, this story is part autobiography, part family history, and part personal and historical reflection on the Holocaust. This tale relates the effect the Holocaust had on the persons who survived it as well as their descendants.

Maus tells the story of Vladek Spiegelman, the author's father, who survived the Holocaust in Poland and how his son, the cartoonist, comes to terms with his father and his tale. This is a paramount example of how the graphic form can be used more effectively to accessibly capture a horrific story. In Maus, the various persons and groups are drawn as anthropomorphic animals (the Jews are mice, the Nazi's cats, etc.) which gives the story an almost fairy tale quality, but by no means detracts from the story's haunting poignance. In some ways, the fairy tale is more painful in the fact that it all really did happen. Vladek's tale of survival, told slowly over the course of the almost 300 page novel, is layered with the author's own story of father as he knew him and his own personal feelings of guilt. Despite the use of animals as characters, the human qualities of these characters shines through and creates a tale that will linger with you long after you've finished the last page.

If you have never read a graphic novel, dismissing them as "comic book stories for kids," you owe it to yourself to read this book and to see the scope of what graphic fiction is able to accomplish. Likewise, if you are a fan of graphic novels, you owe it to yourself to read this book as it remains one of the greatest graphic novels of all time.

Everything is yellow. I love Anne Gedde but who every is printing this calendar should be ashamed of the final product. This will be the last year I buy this calendar if next year's edition looks like this years. I like the calendar, the format but it is just a ugly yellow cast on the photos that makes me say "eww" everytime I open it.

It's a great read (with a forward by none other than Terry Gilliam) that will entertain, educate, and inform. -- Ain't It Cool News, October 17, 2007

    About the Author
John Howe was born in Vancouver, Canada in 1957. He attended the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in Strasbourg. He has had three monographical titles published on his work, including Myth and Magic (Harper Collins, 2001) and worked extensively on the conceptual art for The Lord Of The Rings films with artist Alan Lee and director Peter Jackson.

    Customer Reviews

    Good, Almost Great4
This is a wonderful book, well worth the price for any aspiring fantasy artist. It goes well beyond the usual how-to (although there are plenty of interesting tidbits to pick up) and into the less explored areas of how to find inspiration and how to make use of it. John Howe is articulate and never boring. I have to admit I'm not a huge fan of his style, or blown out of the water by his technique, most of the time. I found the words in the book more inspiring than the pictures. Still, both words and pictures made reading this book a pleasure. The sections on his industry experience were particularly interesting.

I had two slight problems with the book. First, there were times when the musings seemed a little vague, or a little wandering. The essence of what I got from the book can be boiled down to this: Nature and history can be great inspirations. They should be consulted whenever possible, but not slavishly copied. Fine ideas, if not all that unusual. But none of the other things he mentioned really stuck with me.

Second, and this is probably the greater failing in a book like this, the reproductions of the art were somewhat small in some cases. This is probably because it includes so many pictures, which is of course a good thing. It's a difficult balance to strike, no doubt, but there were many cases where I would have liked a closer look.

    Great Book5
This is a very lovely book for showing how a professional artist goes about his business. I appreciate the lack of product endorsement.

Howe can get rather verbose and sometimes repetitive, but this book is filled with great inspiration in text and pictures.

    Creativity Inspiring5
This is a great book and those I've shown my book to agree with me. Amazing talent and very well illustrated. The workshops show amazing creativity.

Rescuing Da Vinci: Hitler and the Nazis Stole Europe's Great Art - America and Her Allies Recovered It

During and following WWII, a special multinational group of more than 350 men and women served behind enemy lines and joined frontline military units to ensure the preservation, protection, liberation and restitution of the world's greatest artistic and cultural treasures. This "band of unsung heroes," formally referred to as the Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives (MFAA) section, or commonly referred to as the "Monuments Men," worked tirelessly to track down, identify and catalogue millions of priceless works of art and irreplaceable cultural artifacts, including masterpieces by Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Rembrandt and Vermeer, that had been stolen by Hitler and the Nazis.

The story of the Monuments Men, including their heroics and exploits in rescuing and safeguarding many of the world's greatest artworks for the benefit of mankind, has never before been fully revealed until now, with the publication of Rescuing Da Vinci, an exhaustively researched historical account written by Robert M. Edsel. Mr. Edsel can best be described as a successful athlete and business entrepreneur turned modern day "Indiana Jones." Mr. Edsel has dedicated the last five years of his life to painstaking and far-reaching research to unravel the secrets of the Monuments Men and, in so doing, to make the world aware of their unprecedented contributions, both during and after WWII, and to ensure that these unsung heroes receive appropriate recognition from the United States government, as well as the broad public.

The detailed documentation, inventories and photographs developed and catalogued by the Monuments Men during and following World War II, have made possible, and continue to make possible, the restitution of stolen artworks of to rightful owners and their descendents. Long after WWII, many Monuments Men went on to become renowned directors and curators of preeminent international cultural institutions, including the National Gallery of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Toledo Museum of Art and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, among many others, as well as professors at esteemed universities such as Harvard, Yale, Princeton, New York University, Williams College and Columbia University. Others became founders, presidents, and members of associations such as the New York City Ballet, the American Museum Association, the American Association of Museum Directors, the Archaeological Institute of America, the Society of Architectural Historians, the American Society of Landscape Architects, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as respected architects, archivists, artists and musicians.

"Mr. Edsel's book is captivating in several respects, from the graphic, garish reminders of the faces of the great plunderers, to the singular beauty of the art they sought to steal. And it is a high and overdue memorial to the "Monuments Men," who did the herculean job of tracking down and repatriating the great art." -- William F. Buckley Jr.

    From the Publisher
From The Wall Street Journal, Dec 15, 2006:

"Mr. Edsel has collected hundreds of photographs documenting the extent of the Nazis' looting and the Allies' efforts to protect or rescue art treasures. We see Goering's private museum of stolen masterpieces, American soldiers recovering Leonardo's "Lady With an Ermine" and Rembrandt's rolled-up "Night Watch" being transported across Holland to safety. Particularly memorable is a photograph of the massive "Winged Victory" sculpture in the Louvre being lowered down the museum steps with ropes and pulleys before to its evacuation in advance of the Nazi invasion. One shudders with gratitude -- for the fact that the piece survived the war and for a book that reminds us of what is at stake when the enemies of civilization seize power."

From The Chicago Tribune, Dec 3, 2006:

"Rescuing Da Vinci by Robert M. Edsel...is a crime story, writ so large it covers a continent. It gathers together, for the first time, nearly 500 photos documenting the Nazi theft of tens of thousands of artworks from European museums and private collections. And it details the immense, painstaking, though little-recognized, efforts of Allied armies to recover and return these precious items."

Mr. Edsel, who was formally a nationally ranked tennis player, as well as an extremely successful business entrepreneur in the oil and gas industry, sold his company and moved to Europe with his family in 1996. While in Florence, he developed a great passion for art and architecture and became curious as to how all the monuments and great works of art survived the devastation of World War II. What began as a question evolved into an impassioned journey to unravel the secrets and heroics of the unsung heroes who saved the world's greatest art and cultural treasures for the benefit of humanity. In addition to his book, Rescuing Da Vinci, Mr. Edsel is forming a not-for-profit foundation to honor modern-day "Monuments Men," is lobbying Congress to appropriately honor and recognize the "Monuments Men," and has co-produced a documentary on the broader subject which will air on PBS in Spring 2007.

    Great Photographic History5
"Rescuing Da Vinci" by Robert M. Edsel.
Subtitled: Hitler And The Nazis Stole Europe's Great Art, America And Her Allies Recovered It". Laurel Publishing, LLV, Dallas, 2006.

After borrowing this book from the Plymouth Public Library, I was initially disappointed when I opened the book. It seemed that the book was all pictures and NO text! The book has some 300 pages and I would estimate that there are some 25 full pages of text, including the index and bibliography in the back of the book. Having said all this, it is my opinion, after having read the book that all those pictures were required to tell the complete story.

Page after page, photo after photo, I would find a painting or sculpture that I recalled from my art history classes, which was a long time ago. The book would show the 1940s picture on one page, with a person, perhaps in a period German uniform, "collecting" the item. And, then, on the facing page, often in full color, would be a present day view of the object. See, for example, pages 204 and 205, were Jan Vermeer's "The Artist's Studio, 1665-1666" is displayed on page 204 in black and white and in full color on page 205. This mixture of historical fact and present day view is carried out throughout the book.

The book begins with an explicit condemnation of the Nazi conquest. It is shown that the Nazi Germans prepared rather extensive documents identifying the art works of various nations and earmarking those works for transportation to the Third Reich. This is an amazing example of the arrogance of the Teutonic thoroughness of Hitler, Göring and the rest of the Nazi leadership. Speaking of Göring, it would seem that at the height of the war, his country "cabin, called "Carinhall", probably had more and better art than most museums in the western world. Page 45 records that Göring had a collection of approximately 1700 paintings. Sadly, there are too many pages in the book showing or identifying works of art that had been destroyed or had been lost. Page 285 shows, for example, Raphael's "Portrait Of A Young Man, 1516", which is still missing.

Still missing is the so-called "Amber Room" which was once located in the city of Königsberg in what was once Prussia. There are entire books, available on Amazon, dealing with the lost Amber Room. With the emphasis on the sins of the Third Reich, little notice is taken of the fact that the Soviets stole the entire city of Königsberg, which is now called Kaliningrad. In fact, Kaliningrad is a tiny piece of Russia, (the so-called Kaliningrad Oblast) stuck between Poland and Lithuania. In Kaliningrad, Russian is the official language and the postage stamps are Russian. Interesting.

And, of course, on a more mundane, but very telling level, there are the 5000+ bells that were stolen and the Dutch trolley cars being prepared for reparation to the Netherlands.

A bit of generally unknown history5
I have always been a museum addict. If the Metropolitan Museum of Art would let me place a cot somewhere, I would probably take up housekeeping. So, it was extremely rewarding to read this story of how so much of the stolen art from WW2 was found, protected, recovered and finally returned to rightful owners. These "Monuments Men" should all have received medals. The world owes much to them for making so many artistic marvels again available.

The illustrations are quite good. Many are available in other sources but so many, at least for me, were viewed here for the first time. The attempts to protect many objects - e.g., St. Marks in Venice - were also interesting. When I visited there a few years ago I was very appreciative.

Mr. Edsel is to be commended.

    Rescuing Da Vinci5
Excellent book with many historical pictures and historical comments of the war's effect on the art of many countries.

    Skilled Drawing4
This is a very fine guide for learning to draw, understanding the principles of drawing, and practicing drawing in a practical way/

    Brilliant4
Great book for those of us with a creative bent but not sure how to proceed. Recommended by Daniel Pink.

    drawing workbook5
i have read the book drawing on the right side of the brain. what this book is can be also taken right out of the original book. it is just more of what it says a work book. or you could just use some drawing pad to do the exercises in it. It takes out of the book the lessons, so save your money and just by the book. which by the way actually is also a very useful book to learn and understand drawing . It is not that it is a bad book, it is just wiser to save your money and buy the actual book to read itself. everything in the workbook is taken from the reading book.

    A is for Amazing5
This is an Amazing Alphabet book for All Ages - words and art come together to challenge the mind and the senses. To hold this book is to have a visual, emotional and intellectual experience.

A is for awesome and amazing.5
I think this book is terrific. It challenges the reader whether child or adult and that's okay. If you want to spend some quality time with your child helping them learn, go for it. If you yourself learn something along the way, bonus. Take the letter E for example. Earthworm, egg, eagle, ear and exclamation point are easy but when you get to enigmatic or elongated get the dictionary. And what a great way to illustrate what the word elongated means by referencing an earthworm. When you get to the Eiffel tower show them how to find France on the map and talk about architecture. Egg and dart is an architectural term. Show them why it's called that.

I am a docent at a significant art museum. You would be surprised what kids can comprehend. Kudos to Mr. Johnson for not being afraid to share complex art concepts with children. Believe me, they can handle it. I can see a grade school teacher or home school teacher using each letter as a lesson plan. This book not only illustrates art concepts and techniques but also shows how math (letter Q and G, golden ratio), science (the letter I), language skills and geography (letter E) find their way into art.

    A most unusual A-B-C book5
My son just turned 3, and he's addicted to the alphabet. He has a number of ABC books -- his favorites are Firefighters A to Z and Dr. Seuss's ABC: An Amazing Alphabet Book! -- and I'm always looking for more to encourage his love of language.

When I first got this book, I found it very appealing. Clearly an immense amount of thought and care went into creating these original images, and each one is an artwork of its own. The images represent many different techniques -- from collage to assemblage to sculpture (including inflatable sculpture!) to installations. The art touches on styles from Pop Art to abstract expressionism to graphic design. Every piece was done specifically for this book, which is a stunning feat in itself. (Technical details are given at the end of the book; I think it would've been nice, especially for the young reader, to provide more informaton on the school or style each artwork represented, and perhaps name representative artists. Some of the pieces seemed to be homages to various artists; I thought I spotted nods to Johns, Liechtenstein, Ernst and others.)

Nevertheless, although I was delighted by the book, I was afraid its abstractness would turn off my toddler. After all, when you're 3, the alphabet alone is abstract enough, without adding additional puzzles to it. Nevertheless, I showed him the book. And he loved it! He enjoyed looking for the hidden letters, and found most of them (even though some of them are in neighboring artworks and I had to point him in the right direction).

I don't think he paid much attention to the words, though. Random sample: "Meditation on the Memory of a Princess ~ Motionless, a man-made, monochromatic magenta mass mimics multiple mattresses and makes a massive mound near a mini mauve marble. (Look for the missing letter M in the letter R.)" I thought it was amusing, but no toddler's going to understand it. Mine seemed content to let the words wash over him as he looked for the letters.

Before you buy this book, check out the sample spread Amazon has provided and think about your preferences and your toddler's. I think this would be an ideal gift for an older child -- say 8 to 12 -- who's interested in art, but it won't suit everybody. Don't let the "A B C" format fool you; some toddlers will love this book, like mine did, but it's no ordinary A-B-C.

    Clear, concise, and detailed illustrations.5
I had my 1880 home flooded in the Iowan floods of 2008. In rebuilding, I have the opportunities to straighten out a lot of "grandfathered" upgrades. This book has been helpful in both DIY's and contracting bids. Now I am getting a home that is safe, code current and still has the Victorian architecture that I loved when I first bought my house. I couldn't have done it without this book. It has save me thou$ands.

Great for IT exams, but you need UBC anyway4
This is great if you just want a general view of UBC and IBC codes.
But, it constantly refers to the IBC for the specifics.
But overall, is a Building Codes for Dummies!!!

Easy understand and get to the point5
Interpretation of codes sometime is confusing. With the picture to explain, it is much easier to understand than just read the words. A picture is better than a thousand words!

    A must have!5
Absolutely too funny! A must have for even those who may not consider the late Gary Larson their favorite cartoonist.

More twisted, demented hilarious cartoons from the master5
Gary Larson is a twisted, demented personality and we are all better for it. His cartoons are some of the most absurd, yet hilarious concentrations of humor that have ever existed and this collection is no exception. Nothing is too sacred or too bizarre to escape the drawing and writing tools of this master. If you have a macabre sense of humor or can tolerate one, then you will love this book.

    VERY FUNNY!5
Far Side really doesn't need a review. It's hilarious and anyone who has ever read it will agree with me. It's a classic! My favorite one from this book is the fear that no matter where you are, a duck a watching you. Too funny!

    Amazon.com Review
The second of three books published by the Center for Environmental Structure to provide a "working alternative to our present ideas about architecture, building, and planning," A Pattern Language offers a practical language for building and planning based on natural considerations. The reader is given an overview of some 250 patterns that are the units of this language, each consisting of a design problem, discussion, illustration, and solution. By understanding recurrent design problems in our environment, readers can identify extant patterns in their own design projects and use these patterns to create a language of their own. Extraordinarily thorough, coherent, and accessible, this book has become a bible for homebuilders, contractors, and developers who care about creating healthy, high-level design.

This is not an end all to architectural problems.4
If you think this book will make you a designer well you are wrong. It is a great piece in the myriad of books on architectural theory and certainly a good read. However, this book is intended for architects and urban planners to read and to use as a reference. If you are not one of these people or even if you are, do not think that this is the only valid book by which to base your designs. Also this is not the greatest book on architecture ever written. If you think so then you have not read very many books. It is just the most popular because uneducated people think that they can pick it up and know how to design houses, buildings, and cities by looking at all they pretty pictures. Believe me when I say that it was not Mr. Alexander's intention to make the average person with no experience what so ever be able to design things.

    no problems5
my purchase arrived when it was supposed to, and was exactly what i ordered (quality and edition). No problems.

surprisingly religious..... interesting, but not believable3
I bought this book after reading the glowing reviews on amazon. It was also an inspiration for Will Wright to make SimCity and the SIMS..... so I had high expectations.

I was shocked to find how opinionated and philosophical the book is. I expected the book to look at the history of cities, towns, etc. and describe patterns that already exist (much like the GoF's software design patterns book talks about patterns that people actually use). Instead the book presents a series of ideals about how the world should be structured.

If these ideals came from concerns I could identify with, I would take it more seriously. But instead they attack "problems" which I do not perceive to exist. For example, on p. 43 "The homogeneous and undifferentiated character of modern cities kills all variety of life styles and arrest the growth of individual character." This statement is contrary to my experience. I have met many great characters from cities, and seen profound cultural differentiation emerge from cities (e.g. jazz, abstract painting, hippie culture, punk, you name it). But the authors proceed as if cities killing character is axiomatic. I agree that there is a rural character that is not present in cities. But citydwellers have another type of character which is equally valid.

I have only made it through the first 100 pages. In these pages are so many naive ideas about mixing cityspace and vacant space. I live in Los Angeles so I know about sprawl & I also know a lot about cars -- while they are aiming for less sprawl then LA, they also neglect traffic congestion. They claim that making small roads in places make people reluctant to drive there.... the experience worldwide (worst in Malaysia, I hear) is that people use whatever roads are present, and if the roads are small, they then just end up sitting in traffic. The author's are naive in their structuring of space, nowhere do they cite any hard evidence of how these structures function.

I might make it the rest of the way through.... at least it's an easy read, with so many repetitions in how the models work you can kinda skim through it. I like the spirit of the book, it is reminiscent of P.M.'s bolo'bolo.... but where bolo'bolo comes from a purely emotional position, these authors take themselves seriously and believe what they are saying is objectively true. I give the book 3 stars because it is nice to see someone work through the ideas of bolo'bolo (which was actually written ~6yrs after alexander's book). I would give 5 stars to a book that did so by looking more at actual data of how spaces are utilized, and presented designs that didn't have obvious flaws in them.

100 Days in Photographs: Pivotal Events That Changed the World

Much more than a book of pictures, 100 Days in Photographs is a compelling visual journey through our age—an odyssey that's personal and universal, immediate and timeless. To create it, Getty Images and National Geographic identified 100 days that represent defining moments of the past 150 years... and crystallized them with photographs that leap from the page to evoke joy and anger, triumph and despair. Supporting the visuals are firsthand journal excerpts, photographers' on-site notes, and insightful text by photography historian Nick Yapp.

From the Getty Images archive, astonishing images depict major world events: revolution in 19th-century Europe, President Lincoln's assassination, the Eiffel Tower's construction from 1887 to 1889, Bleriot flies the English Channel in 1909, the Wall Street crash of 1929, Germany's Kristallnacht, the British quit India in 1947, and more. National Geographic's contributions illustrate scientific, cultural, and geographical topics—including the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, Jane Goodall's study of chimpanzees, Chernobyl's nuclear disaster, the cloning of sheep, the attacks of September 11, 2001, and today's global warming debate. Page after eye-catching page reveals the emotion of an entire event or age captured in a single image—whether of a peasant's tears, of world leaders sharing a secret, or the triumph of an Olympic champion. Politics, war, crime, technology, achievement, fads, and fashion all figure into the life and legacy of these 100 days.

Featuring scores of rare and unpublished photographs uncovered during its creation, this remarkable book provides new perspective on key events and personalities of the past 150 years.
